Thanks to all of you who shared such kind comments following our broadcast premiere this week. West by Orphan Train aired on Iowa Public Television on Monday night. We are now searching for a national outlet for the documentary so we might share it with those of you in other states. We will keep you updated on future broadcasts as they are planned. Thanks for all the encouragement.

  1. My husband’s family adopted Amy Calhoun, who was in the Hopkington’s 1906 Orphan Train Photo. She became Amy Doan and moved to Marion where she lived out her life. She never married, went to college, was an exceptional pianist. Her parents doted on her!! My husband and I loved your documentary. Thank you very much.

    • I used this in my class today teach about different social aspects of the technological innovations of the early 19th century…ie-railroad. Thank you so much for this information and documenting primary sources. Great teaching tool! (Tomball ISD, Tomball, Texas

  2. My grandfather Edward was on the Orphan Train and was ”adopted’ by William and Lena Dibbern who farmed in Cleona or Inland Township, Cedar County. They are buried in the Durant, IA cemetery. We think my grandfather was born about 1892 and on the Orphan Train around age 3. We only guess that his birth date is correct and that Edward was his given name. We do not know his birth surname. If anyone can help me find information on him, that would be great. I have been trying to find information about him for many years. Thanks so much.
